With
the following calculations and steps, you can roughly estimate the
size, installation area, and cost of the solar system you need to help
you choose the right size of solar panels, solar inverter, and battery
capacity to save on the cost of the solar system as well as maximize the
amount of electricity generated by the solar system.
Usually,
we need to calculate the amount of power needed to be consumed per day
based on the amount of power consumed by the user each month (which can
be viewed in the monthly electricity bill). Then we estimate the power
of the solar panel required by the daily solar radiation of the city
where the user is located.
Example: The user consumes 1800kWh of electricity per month, with 4 hours of peak sunshine duration per day.
Therefore,
the user’s daily consumption of electricity is about 1800/30=60kWh.
Assuming that the efficiency of the solar system is calculated in
accordance with 80%, then in one day, the solar panel system needs to
produce at least 60/0.8=75kWh of electricity to meet the user’s power
consumption in one day. Then the total power of solar panels is
75/4=18.75kw.
It should be noted that the efficiency of a
grid-tied solar system is higher than that of a hybrid and off-grid
system, so the efficiency can be taken as 80% to 95%.
Below is a
map of solar radiation in various regions of the world, so you can
predict the peak hours of sunshine per day based on your city’s
location.
2. Solar Inverter Selection and Power Size Calculator
Solar
inverters are mainly categorized as grid-tied inverters, off-grid
inverters, and hybrid inverters. You can choose the right type according
to your needs.
Regarding the calculation of power size.
(1)
It needs to be approximately equal to or greater than the total power
of the solar panels. If you need precise calculation, it needs to be
calculated precisely according to the parameters of the maximum charging
current of the solar inverter, the maximum input voltage of the solar,
the maximum working voltage of the MPPT, the number of input circuits of
the solar inverter with the short circuit current, working current,
working voltage, open circuit voltage and temperature correction factor
of the solar panels. You can also contact us to help you calculate.
(2)
In addition, we also need to calculate whether the inverter can load
all the appliances at the same time, especially the appliances with
motors usually start power will reach 3 to 5 times of the rated power.
In this case, we can refer to the inverter’s parameters to calculate the
HP of the motor that can be loaded. For example, a 5kw inverter can
support a load of about 4HP. Then it can power up to two 2HP air
conditioners.
3. Solar Battery Capacity Calculator
Calculations
need to be made based on the nightly power consumption and the planned
back-up power supply for several days’ worth of load.
Example: the daily consumption is 60kWh, and 50% of the power is used at night.
(1)
When the mains power is sufficient most of the time. This time only
need to provide 30kWh of battery power can be, taking into account the
difference in the maximum depth of discharge of the battery, the battery
is best not to discharge completely, so the choice of 30/0.8 = 37.5kWh
lithium batteries can be. If it is a lead-acid or gel battery, then you
need at least 60kWh battery.
(2) If there is no utility power,
assuming that the maximum duration of consecutive rainy days in the area
is 3 days, then the battery needed to provide 60×3=180kWh of power. A
lithium battery of 180/0.8 = 225kWh can be used.
4. Calculation of Solar Panel Installation Size
If
the panels are to be installed horizontally on a roof or on the ground,
the area occupied by each kw of solar panels is approximately
4.8m²/51ft².
If the panels are to be installed at a tilted angle,
the optimum tilt angle for the solar installation and the distance
between each row of panels will need to be calculated according to the
latitude of the area in which it is located. Ensure that the sunlight
from each solar panel is not blocked at any time.
5. Calculation of the Optimal Tilt Angle for PV Installation
Solar
panels need to be installed facing south, the angle of tilt needs to be
calculated based on the latitude of the area, so that the efficiency of
solar power generation can be maximized, contact us to check the
optimal installation tilt angle for solar panels your area.
